Save Money on Gym Memberships — Work Out at Home

jogGet in shape at home and skip paying for gym memberships

When your budget gets tight, the luxury items, like gym memberships, are the first things to go. After all, if you’re watching every penny, who can afford the costs of an expensive gym. If this is the situation you’re in, don’t worry. With these free pieces of exercise equipment, you can cut gym membership cost and stay in tiptop shape right at home.

Equipment #1 — Your body

When it comes to exercise equipment, most people overlook their body. Does it really qualify as equipment? You bet. Every time you do a pushup, sit-up, dip, squats, and lunges, you are lifting weight — the weight of your body.

Lifting free weights can cause damage if you don’t know how to use them properly. If you are overweight and out of shape these are exactly the type of exercises you need to begin with, and it doesn’t cost a thing — it’s like a free gym membership.

Equipment #2 — Your legs

Once of the most frequently used pieces of equipment in a gym is the treadmill. Guess what? You don’t need a gym membership or a treadmill. The best way to get your heart and lungs in shape is to start walking everyday and gradually add to your time on a daily basis.

Try this — warm up by walking in place for five minutes. Then develop a simple routine by combining walking, marching in place, side steps, jumping jacks, and imaginary jump roping. Switch from each activity every two to five minutes.

Use a kitchen timer or place a digital clock where you can easily see it, you can do each of these movements, timing yourself through each one. Go through your routine as many times as you can, gradually working up to thirty minutes to one hour per day.

Equipment #3 — The outdoors

Walking is great cardiovascular exercise and you can do this exercise by walking outdoors. You have legs you can use free of charge. If it’s a pretty day, walk outdoors and get some sunshine and fresh air. Choose different routes that have different levels of challenge and distances. Be sure to walk in safe areas and during daylight hours.

Equipment #4 — Your TV

If the weather is lousy, turn the TV on and walk or march in place during your favorite show. If this sounds boring to you, buy DVDs for cardiovascular exercise. These DVDs are fun to exercise with and they are inexpensive. There are many exercise DVDs to choose from. To keep from getting bored, choose from yoga, cardio, stretching, Pilates, or dance.

Don’t let your budget get in the way of getting in shape. Set aside your 30 minutes and use what you have. With these free pieces of ‘equipment’, you can exercise virtually anytime, anywhere without the expense of gym memberships.
